COTTAGE INDUSTRY & microAgriculture
Welcome to our page on current projects in the Xalapa, Veracruz Region
We have begun a microcredit program for women who are interested in obtaining the raw materials necessary for making clothing and other products. This also involved a larger loan to a sister team in Aguaje to build a greenhouse to grow jitomate and orchids.

This particular species of Orchid smells like "canela" or cinnamon.
Orchids are a very good source of income due to their popularity. The women involved in both the greenhouse project for jitomate and orchids, and the women involved in cottage industry both have interests in developing orchid businesses. This will take some time, since orchids do not produce quickly. Hence, the idea at the moment, is that they will eventually integrate this with their ongoing projects. |
Weaving and Sewing
Weaving and sewing are excellent options for women to help themselves and families. This is from where the traditional use of the term "cottage industry" comes. (this picture is of a weaver in a chiapas cooperative and is not affiliated with Tierra Azul) |
